Leonardo da Vinci was an Italian Renaissance polymath, painter, sculptor, architect, musician, and scientist. His genius was so great that he has been called the “father of the modern world”.
The Mona Lisa is one of his most famous paintings. It’s a portrait of Lisa Gherardini del Giocondo who was wife to Francesco del Giocondo. She sat for him in 1503 or 1504 on her husband’s commission. Her enigmatic smile has made it one of the most well-known artworks in history and perhaps even more so than any other painting in Western culture.
Da Vinci painted this work using oil on a poplar panel which gives it its unique texture and depth. This piece is now housed at The Louvre Museum in Paris where it attracts millions of visitors every year!
