Katsushika Hokusai (October 1760 – May 1849) is a Japanese artist and painting master. His work is often inspired by the landscapes of Japan or China.
Born in 1760 to a low-ranking samurai family in the part of Edo which is now known as Tokyo, his name means “North Studio (room),” referring to his father’s profession as an artist who painted on textiles for use by kabuki actors.
Hokusai’s artistic career spanned two eras – the last years of Japan’s 250-year isolation from the outside world during which it fought against US Navy gunboats to reopen itself to trade with Europe and America; and then its rapid modernization after 1868 when that reopening led to revolution.
At age 12 he became apprenticed at a booksellers’ where he worked until his death at 89. The work most closely associated with him is probably “The Great Wave off Kanagawa”, one among 36 views of Mount Fuji created between 1830–1833 which are so popular they have been described as “the Mona Lisa” or “the Beatles” of Japanese art. It has also inspired many imitations, including some modern tattoos!
TALMUD’s souvenir exploration team has a deep understanding of this great Japanese artist’s paintings, we created many hot sales souvenirs and gifts with his works, for example, PP placemat with the Great Wave, silk scarf with the Red Fuji Mount.

Katsushika Hokusai was born in 1760 and died in 1849. He lived during the Edo period of Japan, where he produced some of his most famous works.
He began as an apprentice to a woodblock carver at age 12 and later became a student under the tutelage of Katsukawa Shunshō.

This piece was so popular that it has been reproduced countless times since then. It’s also one of the most recognized pieces throughout history for its beauty and detail.
His other well-known works include Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (c1830), One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji (1834–6), and A Tour Around Mt Fuji (1832). These are all incredibly detailed landscapes that show how much love he had for nature, especially when depicting Mount Fuji itself!
